Camera Recommendation

Hey guys...looking to get into the photography hobby and upgrade from my regualar point and shoot pocket cam to a something more "professional".

Any recommendations on entry-level cameras? I don't want to spend too much $$ since I'm a beginner..

Re: Camera Recommendation

Nikon has the D60x or the D40.. entry level dSLR's, they're pretty good.

Re: Camera Recommendation

I was just going to ask this same question. I ran across this one today and was wondering if it was any good.

Re: Camera Recommendation

Most people will agree that you should stay away from Sony DSLRs.

I like my Canon XTi, and am still fond of Nikon's equivalent, the Nikon D80.

There are newer models out above the 2 listed, so, you should be able to get those 2 above for a pretty fair price.

Dobick would be a much better source than I to give you better ideas, so, hopefully he'll chime in.

Re: Camera Recommendation

Definitely go with a Canon or a Nikon.

Really can't go wrong with either one of those. I have a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and I love it.

Still need to get some new lenses, but just playing around with the basic one that it came with has been fine for being a beginner.

Re: Camera Recommendation

How much are you looking to spend?
Go with either a Nikon or Canon. Between the 2, it's mostly preference.
I used to work for Nikon years ago, so I've always been fond of them. Only thing is, Nikon's tend to be more expensive.
LMK if you decide to go with a Nikon, I can check and see if I'm still able to get a company discount.

Re: Camera Recommendation

My friend is a photographer for the US Navy, (and actually, he does it on the side as well.)

He got my setup with a Nikon D40 but I got the D40x (only because the D40 was sold out.)

I love that thing. Pictures are great, the stock lens was decent enough to get shooting right away. There's a LOT of lenses compatible but if you want auto focus you have to buy the kind for it. (There's still a LOT to choose from, so don't let that steer you away.)

Its an older model, so I'd go with the D60 if you want something to start off with and inexpensive, i haven't played with the D80 yet.

Outside of that, Obviously Canon Rebel's their direct competitor, maybe a 6 in one hand and a shit ton of chickens counting eggs thing.

Sony I heard was a great camera, but not too many lens are available as compared to Canon and nikon.

Nix:

Its not a DSLR, but looks like a solid Digi Cam. However, this is what i told my sister when she was thinking about getting a new camera:

"If you want to take awesome pictures, have it work in all sorts of light, and love being able to take pics REALLY fast, get a DSLR. If you want to take just that one shot, want something more compact, or taking to the beach with you for a day out and maybe take a movie, then get a Digi-cam.
If you decide to get a camera because it can do video, you're retarded. "

Now, I do like the panorama option, its cool for taking scenery, but my lens will go down to a 18, so I can take pictures wider than the human eye can see already. Most decent stock lens will go down to a 20 or an 18.
1080p is cool and all for video, but If you get a 10MP DSLR you're WELL over HD.

That's just my 2 cents, looks like a good camera, but for the bulk size of it i'd just go DSLR. I'll never use a Digi-cam ever again.

Re: Camera Recommendation

I used to have a Canon Digital Rebel. Great camera, and you can find some decent used ones from time to time. I bought mine from http://www.bhphotovideo.com/ out of New York City and never had any problems with them.

Nix... The AAFES has Nikon D40 for $445 shipped on their website, but I don't know if the price is competitive, or not. There are also 10% off coupons for AAFES floating around the internet which should drop the price to $400ish.
