Toshiba HD-DVD Player

Took advantage of Walmart's sale of the HD A2 for $98 and bought 5 movies for 14.96 each. Get the player home and it doesn't work and Walmart has no more in stock. Contact Toshiba and they tell me that they will fix it and it won't cost me for repair since it's under warranty (duh, I've only had it for about 35 seconds). But I have to ship it to Massachusetts to their repair depot and pay for the shipping to that facility. What kind of bullshit is that? I told the guy on the phone to go f*%k himself and that I was gonna take it back for a full refund.

I swore I wasn't gonna buy an HD-DVD player and stick with my PS3. I should've listened to myself

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

Well, this format war is interesting only because HD-DVD beats Blu-Ray in the hardware war as far as standalone players (PS3s are not included in the numbers) and they beat them as far as price and availability of movie titles.

But for some reason, Blu-Ray discs outsell HD-DVD discs almost 2 to 1. That's taking into account high retail titles only on HD-DVD like Batman Begins, the Matrix Trilogy, and now Transformers. Add in other hot titles like the Bourne movies and cult classics like Dune and V for Vendetta and it makes no logical sense.

Of course the second New Line and Fox release the LOTR trilogy and Star Wars exclusively on Blu-Ray, I think the war will be over. But that's just my opinion

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

Beta Max was a superior format to VHS in more than one way, VHS won out because it was cheaper, and there were more players/titles available. Sony learned their lesson this time around.

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

I prefer Blue Ray over HD DVD. Probably just because the PS3 does a nicer job at HD playback then the 360 IMO.

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

Beta max was by far a superior tape and format..
VHS won out over beta max for one reason only, PORN, that's right the industry went to VHS and beta max was toast the day it did. For a couple of years after beta max tried like hell to get the XXX industry to use their tapes to but only a few beta max XXX tapes were ever produced. lol

VHS won out because of porn.

The porn industry adopted the cheaper lower quality VHS format, and people bought the hardware that would allow them to view porn in the privacy of their own homes.

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

Well, I got the newer version (HD A3) from best buy with 300 and Bourne Identity included free, I got to pick two more free movies (Batman Begins & Dune) and mail in rebate for 5 more and this one works.

I'll be honest, without having the same two movies to compare, the picture quality is the same. But audio quality on the Blu-Rays seems stronger, especially on the low end. To get comparably loud sound on the HD-DVDs, the volume on my Harmon Kardon has to be set to -16 (it starts at around -50). The same volume level on Blu-Rays is TOOOOO loud. I had to turn it down to -24 (it goes up/down in 1/2 increments). I knew that Blu-Rays encoded the audio at higher bitrate levels, but I didn't think it was that much of a difference.

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

At this point in the HD war, I don't know that there is a huge difference between the two formats to the casual viewer. If you've got to look at a spec sheet to determine which is superior, imo, that difference is negligable.

In this fight it would seem that history is repeating itself, however, sony is on the right side of things this time around, as blu-ray is the official format of the skin flick ftw.

And gents by mentioning availbility of 'titles' I don't see how you could exclude porn when aside from the contorted positions, the titles of said movies have to be the most creative parts of those movies.

Flintbones....Forrest Hump....Dirty Debutaunts 592321...come on.

Re: Toshiba HD-DVD Player

I just have the PS3 and the HD DVD add-on for the 360. There is no comparison between the two in sound. The PS3 blows the 360 away.
