Soldiers and Ghosts by J. E. Lendon

This book tries to explain why both Greek and Roman armies evolved the way they did and why this was important. It's a very interesting history that skips through both Greek and Roman ancient historical periods to show examples/explain its theories (namely that a competitive spirit drove both Greek and Roman troops to try and best each other and win glory, through bravery and discipline (both of these two sides are more detailed than I am being here, but that's the jist of it). I highly recommend this book if you're interested in such an evolution.
