Soggy those aren't horror stories - they're actually the funny ones. Yes, as a newbie staff I did what are called inventory observations to verify that what a client said they had they actually had. What inventory they carry, of course, depends on the business. I've never observed a morgue, but I have observed the inventory of a cemetary (ie graves, crypts, and niches). Basically cemetaries sell available graves and carry a value on the books, so what we have to do is make sure that the graves are in fact available. In my case that meant brining a 6 foot probing rod! Just kidding, all I did was visually inspect the earth to see if there were signs of recent activity. Anywho, I've done other tamer observations such as automotive parts and silicone wafers. Observations are probably about 10% of a newbie's time. After your first year you really don't do them anyway. Its kind of a low man/woman on the totem pole thing. The real value of working as an auditor (not just an accountant in private industry) is that you go from client to client and learn their business inside and out. There is nothing you can't ask a client. You are like the cops to them - they have to tell you everything! If they try to hide stuff they're risking an adverse opinion from us which would cut them off from bank loans and can drop their stock price if they're public. In fact, you gain so much insider information that you are prohibited from owning the client's stock by the SEC! You can walk up and talk to the president/ceo/cfo/controller of a company, ask questions, sit back and absorb what they say . High tech, financial services, manufacturing - the amount you can learn about different industries is endless. All that knowledge is invaluable. Anyway, thinking back to my first year of experience, I'd have to say that I learned more than all four years of school. I'm not going to lie and say its all roses. We have a busy season and work hard. As with most jobs its not the work that keeps you going, its the people you work with. But what I can say is the job allowed me to become independent, pay off my student loans, and buy a car. I'm planning on leaving after next year, but only because I'm going to law school. If it weren't for that I would most definetly stick around. Most leave after two years. They think of the job as a unofficial graduate degree in real world business, not just the kind of business in textbooks. I agree. Papa Vodka asked what major he should pick. I say business/accounting because I've had a good experience in it. I signed a contract before my senior year even started. Others were scrambling for jobs after graduation and the reality of paying off loans hits them. Some choose to defer working right away and go back for more school. My gf dumped another load of money on a masters in education and now is a substitute teacher that works on call never knowing when the next call will come. Needless to say, shes not very happy. |

There is a busy season where you can work average of 55 hours a week. That usually lasts from Jan-April. Rest of the time is ok. You travel a good deal and even when you're at home you can expect to commute from client site to client site. However there is a little more leeway in terms of how you manage your work than in other jobs. You are given a budget of hours to complete a job. If you put in overtime on some days and finish it early, you can take days off. On the other hand, if your not finished by the time your next job begins you can find yourself working late nights and weekends. I wouldn't exactly categorize it as a 9-5, but its not as brutal as investment banking or some law firms.
As for operational management I have no clue. Marketing is alright, but I never got the feeling that it was structured enough to take you places with a high probability. I'm all about the sure thing. However, most CEOs come from the marketing side of business. They need to know how to talk and sell sell sell. But thats also a downside. Alot understand only revenue and not the whole financial picture. The other factor to consider is that most medium to small businesses don't have marketing departments. You can surely find one at a big corporation but you're also stepping into a larger competative ring for promotions. A lot of times you work on comission which can be a great or miserable depending on your salesmanship. All in all I can't really give you a definitive fair answer since I haven't held a position in marketing. However, when I was choosing my path, I just didn't see as much opportunity on that side of business unless you had a golden tongue. |

There's a lot of opportunities in my field, Civil Engineering. Its one of the few fields that grew during our recession over the past few years.
Also, many engineers and scientists now go for MBAs after their bachelors. So if you're interested in starting a business, a science or engineering degree doesn't mean you can't go into business for your own. |

Holi out of curiosity's sake, being that I'm studying the same field as your (accounting, finance, information systems) what firm do you work for. I'm going for an internship at one of the big 4, and have picked Ernst & Young because I did an early recruiting thing with them and they seemed to offer a great internship. You basically work in their audit department and get to dabble accross a lot of the different industries to see which one you like. And also like you said this should build my knowledge at least 10 fold.

Octo thats great! Can't tell from your post if you have already accepted E&Y or you are just picking it to apply for an internship. If you are still in the picking phase, don't put all your eggs in one basket. Blanket the firms with your resume.
If you have already snagged an internship with E&Y, congratulations. They are a very well respected firm. I work for GT which is not "big 4" (#5) but its big enough. 50 offices in the US and 585 offices in 110 countries. |
