I was wondering if any of you know the first use of gas in warfare? I've heard conflicting reports (the British first, the Germans first, the ***** used poison gas first, etc.) and I'm really interested in a definitive answer.

The earliest date that I've heard is January 3rd, 1915, the Germans shelled the Russians with a tear gas. The first date I have for the Germans using poison gas (they used chlorine (sp?)) is mid-April (22nd I believe), 1915 during the Second Battle of the Ypres. So did someone else use poison gas before the Germans used poison gas or did someone use any gas at all before January 3rd, 1915?

Btw, do you guys think gas may come back as a weapon in war?

I thought Russia tested it on its people before WW1 sorta like what Saddam is doing now.

Anything is a possibility now, if it was released I'd expect it to come from a middle Eastern country since that's their main weapon, terrorists groups make it easily.

conq, as far as I knew, It was the French who used Tear gas or Gas in general first...The Germans were the first to use lethal gas. The first major use of gas in WW1 was at Yrpes. The problem with WW1 was that a lot of times the troops would end up gassing themselves because they had a poor delivery system. I think the Germans were the first to develop the artillery shell delivery system, that's what made the difference. Before that, it was a "detonation" style of gas release where the drums/tanks were just set as a type of ambush or released so that the wind would carry it wherever: hence the drawbacks
